Now in its 27th year, the MSMR Student Competition is open to all students from across New England in grades 7-12, whether attending a public, parochial, private or independent school or those who are home-schooled.

The students are challenged to envision themselves as journalists working at a science news service for their fellow teenagers, and report on a recent biomedical research break-through. They are then asked to make a presentation via an essay, poster or website to explain that breakthrough to their peer audience. Students are able to utilize science websites, TED talks, science news blogs, research journals, newspapers, magazines, news releases from research organizations, interviews or personal contacts to uncover their information, which then must be presented in their own words.

Students are judged by a panel of industry experts, and winners are awarded prizes in the following amounts:

1st Place - $500

2nd Place - $250

3rd Place - $100

Honorable Mention – Certificate of Merit

In addition, classroom grants are awarded to the teachers of the winning students in the following amounts:  1st Place - $100

2nd Place - $50

3rd Place - $25

All student winners also receive a book about science, and they and their parents and teachers are invited as our guests to the MSMR Annual Meeting in June in Boston where they will be honored for their achievements.
