Citizen Science is one of the most innovative ways to fully engage students in the science practices which are the foundation for the MA Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) Curriculum Framework. Citizen science is the public participation in scientific research, which may be designed by you, by scientists or in collaboration. Together we will explore citizen science in the classroom through the lens of biological, ecological and natural history research.
  • Learn the history and present-day function of participatory scientific research.
  • Develop curriculum and science education programming with support from scientists, citizen science practitioners and other educators. 
  • Adopt an existing research project or start your own using the tools and resources provided in this course. 
  • Use citizen science in your own classroom to grow your students’ scientific literacy, promote civic engagement in science and advance scientific research. 
Meet the goals of “relevance, rigor and coherence” set forth in the MA STE Framework, and allow your students to demonstrate science knowledge and practices while deepening their curiosity in science, technology and engineering in the real world.

Participate in online modules and discussions to prepare you for a full-day, on-site session with citizen science practitioners, Brandeis faculty and MITS educators. Explore ideas and gain experience that will help you design learning outcomes aligned with the MA STE Framework.
